Wolfpack fires team score of 2304 in smallbore
AKRON, Ohio – NC State rifle's Lauren Phillips put together a #STATEment performance in the smallbore competition Friday evening to claim the individual title at the 2017 Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships held inside the Louis and Freda Stile Athletics Field House.
The native of Seabeck, Wash., fired a score of 586 in the preliminaries to advance to the finals with the second-best score. In the finals session, Phillips overtook West Virginia's Olympian Ginny Thrasher for the top score with a total of 456.7 points, edging Thrasher by 2.4 points (454.3) to win the championship.
Phillips becomes the first NC State shooter to win an individual title in the GARC since the Wolfpack joined the conference in 2007. Interestingly, the GARC title is the second for Phillips in her collegiate career, as she also won the smallbore championship in 2014 as a freshman at Nebraska.
As a team, the Pack logged a team score of 2304 to occupy fourth place after the first day of competition heading into air rifle on Saturday. West Virginia leads the event with a team score of 2341 and Army is second with a 2311.
Kentucky turned in a score of 2306 to claim third, while Nebraska (2303), Memphis (2303), Navy (2295), Ole Miss (2286) and Akron (2286) round out the field.
