Wolfpack falls 75-67 to Jackrabbits in final game of Puerto Rico Clasico
November 24, 2017
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The NC State women's basketball team (6-1) had its six-game unbeaten streak broken during its final contest at the relocated Puerto Rico Clasico Friday afternoon, falling 75-67 to South Dakota State at Cardinal Gibbons High School.
The Wolfpack owned a 39-36 rebounding advantage and got to the free throw line for 27 attempts, but eight three-pointers from the Jackrabbits in the first half alone put NC State in a hole from which it could not recover. NC State trailed by as many as 16 points (48-32) late in the third quarter of Friday's contest and would battle back to within five (62-57) with 2:50 remaining in the game, but South Dakota State put the game away from the charity stripe, sinking 15 of a possible 16 free throws in the fourth quarter.
NC State had four players reach double figures, with Kaila Ealey (16 points), Aislinn Konig (15), Chelsea Nelson (14), and Akela Maize (10) all scoring at least 10. Kiara Leslie tied with Nelson for a game-high eight rebounds, while Ealey added seven rebounds and five assists to her efficient scoring afternoon.
South Dakota State was led by two 20-point performances from Myah Selland (4-5 from distance) and Madison Gubert (7-7 from the FT line). Teammate Macy Miller also had 16 points. The Jackrabbits hit 12 three-pointers, went 15-16 from the charity stripe, and spread out 19 assists against just 11 turnovers.
"Got to give South Dakota State a lot of credit," NC State head coach Wes Moore said. "That's a great program. They are coached well. Everyone on the court can shoot it and they are just a smart team. They make good decisions with the ball. Defensively, they were physical with us and did a good job of doubling the post, making it hard for Akela (Maize) and Chelsea (Nelson) to have the kind of games they had Thursday (vs. Alabama).
"We have to learn from this. Our transition defense was not good. There are a lot of things that we will see on film that we can get better at. This is tough, though, because we had a good opportunity today to get a good RPI win and we let it get away."
NC State returns to action at Rutgers on Thursday, Nov. 30 in the 2017 installment of the B1G/ACC Challenge. Tip-off between the Wolfpack and Scarlet Knights is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Piscataway, N.J., with live video coverage provided by the B1G Network.
