Allerik Freeman led NC State with 14 points and nine rebounds
PARADISE ISLAND, BAHAMAS – The NC State men's basketball dropped a 67-58 decision to Tennessee in the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis Third Place Game on Friday at the Atlantis Resort.
With the loss, NC State falls to 5-2, while Tennessee improves to 4-1.
Allerik Freeman led four Pack players in double figures with 14 points and also led the team with nine rebounds. Lennard Freeman added 11 points, while Braxton Beverly and Omer Yurtseven all contributed 10 points.
The Pack struggled on offense in the first half as NC State shot 30.8 percent from the field and turned the ball over 16 times. The 16 turnovers were uncharacteristic and more than NC State had had in any of its first six games of the season. The Pack has had 10 turnovers or less in four of the first six games of the season, but had a season-worst 21 on Friday.
Trailing by seven at the half, NC State came out of the locker room with renewed energy, quickly cutting the deficit to two on a Torin Dorn lay-up three minutes into the second half. Tennessee responded with a 6-0 run to push the lead back to eight and eventually extended the lead to 11 midway through the second half. The Pack made one final push, going on a 12-5 run to pull within four, 59-55, with 3:19 remaining, but could get no closer.
Grant Williams led the Volunteers with 14 points, while Kyle Alexander added 13 rebounds and four blocked shots.
NC State returns to PNC Arena Wednesday evening when it hosts Penn State in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. The game will tip at 7:15 and be shown on ESPNU.
