NC State ends first season under head coach George Kiefer with an 8-6-4 record after making first NCAA Championship appearance since 2009
November 16, 2017
NORFOLK, Va. – Sustaining just its first loss in regulation since September 29, the NC State men's soccer team (8-6-4) saw its historic 2017 season come to an end Thursday evening against No. 25 Old Dominion, as the Wolfpack fell 2-0 to the Monarchs at the ODU Soccer Complex.
Goals on both sides of halftime by Brandon Perdue (33') and Max Wilschrey (72') proved the difference in a contest that was very compact and defensive in the first half but opened up over the course of the final 45 minutes with the Wolfpack pressing forward in an attempt to record an equalizing goal.
"I'm very pleased because if you told me at the beginning of the year that we'd be playing in the NCAA Tournament, I would say that I would be very proud of them," NC State head coach George Kiefer said. "And I am very proud of how the group meshed together and got to this point.
"I think we did some things to hurt ourselves tonight, but it is a great learning experience. You can't duplicate this environment. I think the stress we had for 10 days about whether we were in (the tournament) or not was good stress, and we can learn from that. What can we do (in the future) to not have that stress? What can we do to become a home team in the NCAA Tournament? What can we do to earn a bye in the NCAA Tournament? There's a lot of good lessons that come from this."
Leon Krapf made a very important save in the 28th minute to keep the match scoreless. Hans Kroschwitz bent in a wicked shot from just outside the penalty area to the right of the goalkeeper, and the freshman from Germany had to make a full diving extension to palm it just wide of the far post.
Julius Duchscherer recorded the Wolfpack's first good opportunity in the 31st minute. Freshman David Loera got past his mark just inside the penalty area and played a nice ball to Duchscherer, who was in a good position 12 yards from goal. The senior struck the shot first time and missed it just wide of the near post.
Old Dominion opened the scoring the 33rd minute when Perdue capitalized on a deflected cross into the Wolfpack's penalty area. A dangerous ball was played in from the wing by Kroschwitz to Perdue, who settled, turned under pressure, and struck it hard and low from very close range to beat Krapf for his seventh goal of the season.
The Wolfpack had two more good chances in the 37th and 40th minutes. In the 37th, Manny Perez found a running Duchscherer heading towards the near post. The senior midfielder got enough of a flick on it to beat the ODU goalkeeper, but his shot went just over the target and bounced off the top of the crossbar. In the 40th, senior defender Caleb Duvernay played an accurate 25-yard diagonal pass to Stephen Elias inside the penalty area. Elias collected the pass and finished inside the far post, but unfortunately the linesman had raised his flag for offside.
The match opened up considerably in the second half with the Wolfpack pressing for an equalizer. Jan-Luca Ahillen had a good opportunity from 20 yards in the 56th minute, but his shot went high of the target. NC State then earned its second corner of the evening in the 69th minute, but the Monarchs were able to safely clear the danger.
Old Dominion doubled its lead in the 72nd minute when Max Wilschrey scored his eighth goal of the season with a low strike off the inside of the far post and into the back of the net from 15 yards. Teammate Niko Klosterhalfen provided the assist.
NC State's historic first season under new head coach George Kiefer comes to an end after achieving a number of firsts. The team qualified for its first NCAA Championship since 2009 and hosted the first ACC Championship first-round match at Dail Soccer Stadium in program history. Despite a preseason prediction of 11th, the Wolfpack tied for seventh in the ACC standings and knocked off two top-five teams throughout the year.
