NC State starts ACC schedule 3-1 for third time in four years
January 8, 2017
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Led by a career-high 23 points from junior Chelsea Nelson and a dominant team defensive effort, the No. 29/23 NC State women's basketball team (13-4, 3-1 ACC) earned a 65-50 win at Wake Forest Sunday afternoon.
Trailing 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, the Wolfpack played incredible defense to close out the remainder of the half. For the entirety of the second quarter, NC State did not allow Wake Forest to make a single field goal (0-11) and outscored the Demon Deacons 15-1 in the period. Nelson scored nine points for NC State in the second quarter alone.
All told, the Wolfpack held Wake Forest without a made field goal for a stretch of 14:05 in the game, turning a 14-12 deficit into a 33-18 advantage. NC State would achieve a 20-point lead (45-25) with 3:15 remaining in the third quarter and withstood a fourth-quarter push from the Demon Deacons which saw them pull within 10 points on three occasions in the final stanza.
"I'm proud of our kids and the effort they are giving," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in his postgame radio interview with broadcaster Patrick Kinas. "Wake always plays us tough over here every time. I'm just really excited to get out of here with win and be 3-1. Last year against these teams (Notre Dame, Florida State, Wake Forest on the road) we didn't fare so well, so it's great to get off to a good start against such a tough schedule."
Nelson led all players with 23 points on 8-12 shooting and a perfect 6-6 mark from the free throw line. She was joined in double figures by 12 points from Ashley Williams and 10 from Miah Spencer. Jennifer Mathurin led all players with 10 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive end. Spencer also added eight assists, bringing her career total to 421 and moving her past former teammate Myisha Goodwin-Coleman into sixth place all-time at NC State.
Ariel Stephenson led Wake Forest with 17 points and was joined in double figures by teammate Elisa Penna (15).
