RALEIGH – The NC State women's tennis team is set to kick off its 2017 spring dual season as it hosts a doubleheader on Saturday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The Wolfpack will take on Appalachian State at 9 a.m. and Campbell at 5 p.m.
Fall Recap
In one of its strongest fall seasons, the team clinched 47 singles wins and 24 doubles wins. Martina Frantova started her senior season as No. 28 on the Oracle/ITA NCAA Division I poll and faced strong competition throughout the fall including No. 8 Luisa Stefani (Pepperdine), No. 10 Lily Miyazaki (Oklahoma) and No. 18 Lauren Marker (Arizona). Amanda Rebol held an outstanding record in singles play, winning eight of nine matches. Two freshmen, Anna Rogers and Adriana Reami, joined the Pack. Both ladies posted winning records in their first fall season.
In October, the team sent a record number of ladies to the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., earning three wins against tough competition. The Pack also had a successful run at the ITA Carolina Regional tournament, where Frantova advanced to the semi-finals in singles play, and Frantova and Tayla Stenta reached the semi-finals in doubles before being edged out.
Wolfpack In the Rankings
In the latest rankings, Frantova checked in at No. 36 among Division I players, and earned the No. 8 rank on the Carolina Regional rankings, while sophomore Rebol will enter the season at No. 20.
Scouting Appalachian State, Campbell
Saturday will mark the season opener for all three teams. During the 2015-16 season, Appalachian State complied a 7-14 record while Campbell earned an 11-8 record. Appalachian State returns a mature squad which features three seniors but no freshmen. Alternatively, four freshmen sit on Campbell's roster. The Wolfpack, who finished last year's season with an overall 15-12 record, will debut two freshmen.
Simon Says
"It's a little bit hectic in the spring trying to get as much practice as we can in a short period of time and trying to get the girls up to speed. I think matches can accelerate that. With that in mind, we are looking forward to this double-header coming up. We have a lot of things we are working on and we'll be able to see them in action for the first time as a group. Hopefully that gives us an indication as to whether what we are working on is being effective, and it may bring to light a couple of things we need to work on more."
