
Pack Sets National Marks at Carolina Cup

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The NC State track and field team posted an impressive start to the 2017 campaign Friday night at the Carolina Cup, earning two national top-two marks and five ACC Indoor qualifying marks.
Joshua Davis led the way for the Pack with dominating victory in the weight throw. Davis' mark of 70'5.75" broke his old school record by 6.25" and moved him from fifth to second in the NCAA standings. He comfortably won the competition by 15'3.50".
Cravont Charleston made a dazzling freshman debut, tying the NCAA's fastest 60m dash mark this season of 6.68, which also ranks third in school history. The Charlotte, N.C., native has qualified for the ACC Championships with the time and is currently in national-qualifying position.
Charleston won both the preliminary and final round of the 60m dash and comfortably eased to a victory by .21 during his final race.
Throws:
In addition to Davis' standout performance, Lauren Evans led the women with a personal best and an additional ACC qualifying mark. Evans took second in the weight throw with a mark of 60'7.25", passing her previous PR by 3'2.75". The throw moves her from 10th to fourth in program history in the event. Evans also finished runner up in the shot put, throwing a season-best 46'0.00".
Sprints/Hurdles:
Following Charleston's victory in the 60m, the men's sprinters flexed its depth, as Shannon Patterson took second and Dylan Peebles finished third in a podium sweep of the event. Patterson's time of 6.89 qualifies him for the ACC Championships, while Peebles' 6.91 is just .01 shy from the post-season qualifying mark. Patterson also added a 200m dash victory with a time of 21.91.
In the 400m dash, Abdur Rahmaan Kelly returned to the track for his first action since redshirting last season due to an injury. Kelly finished second in the 400m dash in 49.74 and added an anchor leg split of 49.24 in the 4x400.
On the women's side, Gabriele Cunningham recorded ACC qualifying marks in the 60m and 60 hurdles. Cunningham secured her spot in the postseason with a 7.55 60m and an 8.62 60 hurdles.
In the 400m dash, Tiana Patillo finished second overall with a time of 57.42.
Jumps:
In the high jump, Christopher Garrick and JaTory "JT" Reid both finished just .01 shy of the conference mark, jumping 6'6.75" on their season debuts.

NC State will be back in action next weekend at the Hokie Invitational. The meet runs Friday to Saturday at Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va.
