BLACKSBURG, Va. – The NC State men's soccer team fell in its first Atlantic Coast Conference road contest of the season, losing 3-0 at No. 23 Virginia Tech Friday evening. The Wolfpack outshot the Hokies by a 14-11 count in the match but was unable to find the scoring touch.
"This was another game where we outshot the opponent and had more of the ball," NC State head coach Kelly Findley said. "We won every physical category, but we've got to finish and put the ball in the back of the net. That's what matters the most."
In addition to outshooting the Hokies, NC State (1-5-0, 0-2-0) earned four corners compared to Virginia Tech's two. Julius Duchscherer led all field players with four shots. He was one of eight Wolfpackers to record at least one shot in the match. Ade Taiwo (2), Tanner Roberts (2), and Travis Wannemuehler (2) also registered multiple attempts during the match.
Virginia Tech took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute of the match when Marcelo Acuna scored his fifth goal of the season. The Hokies (6-1-0, 1-1-0) doubled their advantage on a Som Essome tally in the 15th minute and concluded the scoring with a Ryan Marcano strike in the 68th.
"We got off to a slow start and gave up a few soft goals," Findley said. "We cannot do that on the road and we simply cannot do that in conference games."
Lukas Zarges nearly pulled one back for the Wolfpack late in the first half, but his 39th-minute shot was saved by goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard. Roberts had a good opportunity for the Wolfpack early in the second half, but his attempt in the 55th minute was also stopped by Lundgaard.
"With key moments in front of our goal and in front of their goal, we must take advantage," Findley added. "If we do that, this is a team that has a chance to be great."
NC State returns to action at home on Tuesday, Sept. 20 against Liberty. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Flames is set for 7 p.m. at Dail Soccer Stadium and the match will be broadcast live on the ACC Network Extra.
