2016 #PackCamp: Practice No. 9

RALEIGH, N.C. - Tuesday morning the Wolfpack was on the turf practice field in shoulder pads.
Transcript of head coach Dave Doeren's postpractice comments on Tuesday:
On PK Connor Haskins:
He really found us. It was one of those deals where his family were big Wolfpack supporters and he was looking to play another year. I think those kickers kind of know what's going on in the nation as far as whose kickers are graduating and who might need competition. And obviously, he grew up… we talked the other day… we were standing in the stadium… when he was a little kid, it was before they did the renovations and he used to sit up on the grass hill. So I mean this was his dream school and, ya know, it just happened that Kyle didn't have the year that we all wanted him to have, so completion that something him having his last year was something we were open to.
On the difference between kicking at UNC Pembroke vs. ACC:
If you're doing it right, you don't see that. You know, you see the snap, the hold, the kick. It's no different when you're playing receiver. When you're truly locked in, you don't hear anything; you're just playing—you see the ball and you catch it. You got to get to where, what we call 'The Zone,' where you're blocking out all the distractions.
On P A.J. Cole's potential to be All-ACC, and his ability to put the team inside the 20-yard-line:
I think a lot of being a specialist is being a mature guy. You're on your own a lot and you have to be gifted, don't get me wrong, but Cole… A.J. Cole, he's been on mission trips all over the world. He's built homes in homeless areas. He's a selfless guy; he cares a lot about everyone around him more than he cares about himself. And I say that because he's willing to sacrifice. He can kick the ball as high as any kid I've seen in my life. So his hang-time because of his length and flexibility is really special. Just the way he goes about his work is what gives him the chance to be as good as he's gonna be.
On WR Maurice Trowell:
He didn't have a great today, but yesterday he made a great move on the screen that he caught. So it was one of those things where you get hot—weather—and you lose focus, and for him, he's just got to quit listening to that and play, and play, and play, because he's a guy I really think can come on for us.
On WR Bra'Lon Cherry and WR Nyheim Hines:
Well, I told our players last year, you could even feel it in the stands when you were about to get a kick to one of those guys. Everyone was on the edge of their seat, and that's what you want. And when you're blocking for that kind of player, your urgency is different too, because you know that if you just get your butt in the hole and give him somebody to run behind, all the sudden you've got a big play.
On eliminating kick-offs:
I think that's bad for football. Period. I understand if you want to move it up, but they shouldn't eliminate a play that can have so many different impacts. You know, whether it's a pop-up kick or a surprise on-sides, or the number of kids who get a play on those downs that are walk-ons or young players that are developing… I think that's too much going into that. They eliminated the kick-off wedge which was the big collision point. You can't do that anymore. I'd have to see a lot of data since that little change that says you gotta get rid of that play.
On eliminating extra points:
Right, same thing—I think they ought to leave it alone.
