2016 #PackCamp: Practice No. 5
8/5/2016 1:45:00 PM | Football
RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State held its first fall practice in full pads on Friday morning.
Transcript of head coach Dave Doeren's postpractice comments on Friday:
On the first day in full pads:
It was spirited as I expected it to be. We made some strides in some areas, but I thought we turned the ball over too many times on offense. The defense did a good job making that happen. We got in the red zone today, that was a pretty big focus, and the offense made some big plays in the red zone. In the move-the-ball segment the defense got their way with them.  That's kinda what you want to see: competing back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.Â
Â
That was their fifth straight day, they've worked really hard. Tomorrow's practice will be similar but we'll have a short yardage scrimmage so we can see them finish plays.
Â
On what he sees from the offensive line:
You're seeing those guys be physical and good communication. Having [Joe] Scelfo at center, a veteran player in the middle, helps. He can kinda control things for those guys. You can tell Tony [Adams] and Garrett [Bradbury] learn fast.  All of them did a great job this summer, so you can see a difference in their conditioning too.
Â
On the strength/conditioning of the team:
Some of the bodies you can see the changes. You look on paper and they give you the analysis and you see the body fat differentials and the strength gains but sometimes that doesn't equate when you're talking about a 340 lb. guy and how they look with their shirt off. But they're definitely going in the right direction.Â
Â
We're bigger, we're longer and we're more explosive. The thing that you like is that we're playing hard, 24 periods. We have Catapult, a system which tracks their intensity during practice, and you can measure how hard they're working in the last two periods.
Â
On Nyheim Hines' progress after track season:
He was a little rusty at first. He spent a lot of time in the backfield for us this spring and now we've got him getting reps in the slot just so he's got both kinda ironed out. He made some good catches today. Today was his best day catching the football in camp.
Â
On if the freshmen are struggling:
Not as much as you would think. Summer 2, we're able to spend a couple of hours a week with them teaching them the playbook and the upperclassmen have done a good job helping them out.
Â
On freshman WR Kelvin Harmon and other wideouts:
Phyically he's 215 pounds and he's put together.  The game for him is more mental right now – all the things defenses do in college – putting that together so he can show his gifts. Stephen Louis has an opportunity. I would like to see Maurice Trowell take a step up and become more of a playmaker.
Â
On RBs Johnny Frasier and Reggie Gallaspy II:
Both of them are just more mature about the process. They're focused and they understand the workload, so they're not out here bright-eyed like "oh my gosh, what's about to happen?" I've been impressed with Johnny in particular, just his daily focus. It's his best back to back to back to back days that he's had.  Staying focused and getting better.
Â
On LBs Airius Moore and Jerod Fernandez:
They're very high football IQ players. They have tremendous understanding of Coach Huxtable's expectations and the playbook so they direct things and get people lined up, Anticipate things from the offense. They've got a lot of game reps banked. That experience is invaluable.
Â
On the placekickers:
We live rushed them today and they both made a kick. We'll continue to do that if we can.  Next Saturday we'll have live kicks.
Â
On the first week of practice:
They're in great condition, they're had really positive attitudes, they understand how to take care of their bodies. It's a mature team. It's been easy to get out of them what you want to get out of them so far.
The Pack will be back in full pads tomorrow morning, then an off-day of practice on Sunday when the Pack hosts its annual Meet the Pack Day.
