RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State head coach Pat Popolizio has announced the Wolfpack's 2016-17 schedule. The Pack's slate includes 14 scheduled duals and five tournaments during the regular season, before NC State defends its ACC title by hosting the conference championship March 4 in Reynolds Coliseum.
"This year's schedule has great balance between dual meet and individual competitions," said Popolizio. "We made some changes to our schedule, to add more individual type competitions by adding The Tussle and Journeymen Classic along with competing in the Midlands Championships for the second straight year."
After being displaced last season due to the impressive $35 million renovation of Reynolds Coliseum, the Wolfpack will be returning to its normal home venue for the 2016-17 season. The Pack will host five duals inside Reynolds, with a pair of ACC home duals. In addition, NC State is the host for the 2017 ACC Championship, and if the Pack were to earn a bid, NC State will also host the National Duals against a Big Ten school prior to the NCAA Championships.
"We are extremely excited for the opportunity to host our dual meets in the newly renovated Reynolds," said Popolizio. "Not only will the arena be great for the wrestlers to compete in, but the experience for the fans will be unforgettable. There is a lot of history and tradition displayed in the Reynolds Walk of Fame & History project for the fans to enjoy."
NC State starts its 2016-17 season competing in The Citadel Open on Nov. 6. The Pack's home schedule kicks off with the Wolfpack Duals on Nov. 19, where NC State will face Air Force and UNC Pembroke at Cary Academy.
The first chance for Wolfpack fans to catch the Pack in Reynolds will be Nov. 30 against Appalachian State. Out of conference, the Pack will also host Nebraska, who finished 8th at the 2016 NCAA Championships, on Dec. 9 before the start of league action.
ACC duals begin on Jan. 11, when NC State hosts Duke. The home dual slate comes to an end in early February, after NC State hosts Pitt (Feb. 3) and West Virginia (Feb. 5).
The ACC dual season will wrap up on Feb. 11 with a trip to Virginia Tech.
The postseason begins with the ACC Championship being held in Reynolds on March 4.
"We look forward to defending our ACC Championship by hosting the conference championships, and showcasing the elite level wrestling within the ACC right here in Raleigh," said Popolizio. "With the support of Wolfpack Nation, in our home arena, I know it will be a very energized atmosphere!"
NC State will host the annual Wolfpack Open on Nov. 30 in Carmichael Gymnasium. The Pack will also be traveling to three tournaments during the regular season, the Journeymen/ASICS Collegiate Classic (Nov. 13), the Journeymen Tussle (Dec. 4), and the Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30).
The 2017 NCAA Championships will be held March 15-18 in St. Louis.
Fans will be able to get their first glimpse of the Pack on Oct. 5, when the Pack holds its annual Brickyard Bash in NC State's Brickyard.
The 2016-17 Wolfpack returns eight of its 10 starters from last season, including a pair of All-Americans (junior Kevin Jack in 2015 and senior Pete Renda in 2016) and also returns a pair of ACC Champions (Jack and senior Max Rohskopf in 2016).
The 2015-16 season will go down as one of the best in school history. NC State won the 2016 ACC Championship, the first at NC State since 2007. Four individuals were crowned conference champions, and six made it to the finals overall.
Following the conference title, the Pack tied a school record with eight NCAA Qualifiers, including six seeded grapplers and for the first time ever; four were seeded fifth or better. As a team, NC State finished in 11th place at the NCAA Championships, the best finish since a school-best seventh in 1993. The Pack tied the school record with three All-Americans in 2016: Tommy Gantt (5th - 157), Pete Renda (3rd - 184) and Nick Gwiazdowski (2nd - 285).
NC State finished the regular season ranked #2 in the final NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll, the highest ranking in school history. The Pack went 23-1 in dual matches, setting a new single season school record for most wins. NC State also set a new school record with 21 consecutive wins to start the 2016 season, as the previous best was nine. Included in the dual wins were road victories at national powers Oklahoma State and Iowa - making NC State the first school ever to win at both in the same season.
Following his fourth season at NC State, Popolizio was named the 2016 National Coach of the Year by FloWrestling.com.
On the recruiting trial, NC State's 2016 12-person signing class was ranked the nation's best by both FloWrestling.com and InterMatWrestling.com. In that class, the Pack signed two of the top-six ranked wrestlers in the 2016 recruiting class, and five in the top-66 overall.
