RALEIGH, N.C. — Each year, the NC State Athletics Department welcomes new student-athletes to campus with a series of events designed to inform and prepare them for the years ahead on campus. The first event, New Student-Athlete Orientation, took place Sunday morning in the Talley Student Center.
All freshmen and transfers are expected to attend the event, which introduces them to resources they will have on campus. Support staff such as ASPSA (Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes), Sports Medicine, Nutrition, and Sports Psychology were all represented—each program benefits athletes in a way that is designed to help student-athletes maintain success in the classroom while playing at a high level.
"Through this event, we hope to make their transition into college easier. They have many resources available to them as Student-Athletes, and this is a good way to introduce the new student-athletes to all of them in one session," explained Assistant Director of Athletics Tonya Washington.
Athletic Director Debbie Yow was also in attendance and welcomed the new athletes to start the day. The athletes then moved into a class that discussed the proper use of social media.
Before the day ended with lunch, the student-athletes attended a theatrical presentation called "Sex Signals" given by Catharsis Productions. While designed to be entertaining and funny, the topics it addressed were far from that. Catharsis Productions visits college campuses across the country using an unconventional approach to talk about culture, sex, and bystander intervention.
"This year's freshmen and transfer class is one of the largest in history, so today was a good way for the athletes to meet one another before the academic year starts this Wednesday," Washington said.
On Tuesday night, the department will hold its next event, the annual Welcome Back Pack Dinner.
