RICHMOND, Va. – The NC State women's soccer team drew 1-1 in an exhibition game with Richmond Friday night at River Road Field.
The Pack notched its goal in the second half after Paige Griffiths provided an assist to Rachel Cox who placed a controlled finish into the back of the net.
"We had 17 healthy players and got to play them all," said head coach Tim Santoro. "We didn't have Jackie, so we missed her. Its disappointing to tie, but there are a lot of positives. We had the majority of possession and should've had more than one goal."
"It was the first time we played 11v11 this year. The score line wasn't indicative of the game, but you learn from it and get ready for the first real game next weekend."
NC State debuted a fresh squad and played all 17 healthy players during the match. The Pack out possessed and outshot the Spiders, but was unable to finish several chances, which would've won the game.
NC State opened the scoring with the goal from Cox. The play was started by Griffiths who won a ball on the wing and cut in towards the middle of the field. Griffiths served up a cross to Cox, who made a nice run past the defense and found the back of the net with her shot.
Richmond scored its goal in the 80th minute off a Wolfpack turnover in its own half. The Pack continued to press the Spiders after the equalizer, but didn't find the go-ahead goal before the final whistle.
NC State will start its 2016 regular season against La Salle at the Wake Forest Tournament next Friday at 5 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C. Two days later, the Pack will face San Diego at the same tournament.
