
NC State Advances Four to NCAA Championships

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The NC State track and field teams had an impressive opening day to the NCAA East Preliminary, as four athletes book their tickets to the NCAA Championships.
Jonathan Addison and Alexis Perry both advanced in the long jump, and Luis Vargas and Sam Parsons advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 10,000m.
Graham Crawford and Megan Moye both advanced to Saturday's 1,500m quarterfinals.
Throws:
Joshua Davis concluded his season, finishing 39th overall in the hammer throw with a toss of 196'0". Davis has posted an impressive sophomore season, breaking two school records, earning All-America honors in the weight throw, earning All-ACC honors in the weight throw and hammer throw and qualifying for regionals for the first time in his career.
He broke the weight throw school record during indoor season with a toss of 69'11.00" to qualify for indoor nationals and he broke the hammer throw school record with a heave of 208'11", which earned him a spot at the regional competition.
Jumps:
Addison was the first Wolfpack athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships, winning the NCAA East Preliminary long jump with a leap of 26'0.00". It marks his fifth career qualification for the NCAA Championships.
Addison sat in 16th place and out of the qualifying spots heading into the final frame. On his third jump – the last of the competition, Addison soared to his best mark of the outdoor season to take the top spot and advance. The Raleigh, N.C., native beat out his closest competitor by 8.50" to take the win.
Later the in the day, Alexis Perry sealed her second-straight NCAA Outdoor Championships appearance with a fifth-place finish in the women's long jump. Perry jumped 20'8.50" to clinch the bid.
The Durham, N.C., native earned the mark on her first jump of the competition. Last year, Perry just missed qualifying. Her fifth-place finish today marks a 15-spot increase from last year and her first time advancing to outdoors in the long jump.
Sprints:
The Wolfpack men's 100m sprinters narrowly missed qualifying for the quarterfinals in the event, as Quashawn Cunningham finished three spots out and just .03 of a second from qualifying. Cunningham crossed the finish line in 10.56. Shannon Patterson finished 34th overall, crossing the finish line in 10.67.
The duo will be back in action in the 200m, 4x100 and 4x400 events the rest of the weekend.
On the women's side, Paisley Simmons and Gabriele Cunningham concluded their seasons. Simmons crossed the finish line in 12.05, and Cunningham finished with a time of 11.84. They both wrap up successful season, earning All-ACC honors in the 100m dash at the ACC Championships.
Distance:
Moye and Crawford both earned spots in Sunday's 1,500m quarterfinals after advancing through the round of 48 today.
Moye led her race from start to finish to earn the automatic qualification with the win. Moye crossed the finish line in 4:18.79, finishing fifth in the overall standings.
Graham Crawford ran in a loaded head and had massive kick over the final lap to move up and advance on time. Crawford entered the bell lap in 11th place before sprinting past five runners during the final 400m.
Crawford's time didn't automatically advance him into the finals, but he was the first athlete to advance on time, running in the fastest heat of the night. He crossed the finish line for sixth in heat and sixth overall in 3:42.43.
Both Crawford and Moye will compete in the 1,500m quarterfinals Saturday.
In the final event of the night, Vargas and Parsons both took top-12 finishes in the 10,000m to book their spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. It marks the first NCAA Outdoor Championships appearance for both runners.
Vargas finished fourth in 30:03.74 and Parsons crossed the finish line for 11th in 30:05.60.
The NC State duo opened the race near the back of the 48 runners. With 12 laps remaining, Vargas and Parsons made a big move, jumping to the outside lanes to move into the top-15.
The duo held the positions as the race unfolded. With 400m to go, Vargas sealed his position in the front group, while Parsons kicked into the top-12 and held off the other runners to take 11th.
