WASHINGTON, D.C. - Maverick Rowan put on a show in the second half, NC State made the key plays late and the Wolfpack men's basketball team has a date with Duke on Wednesday afternoon. Rowan scored 24 points and Anthony 'Cat' Barber added 22 as the Pack beat Wake Forest 75-72 in the ACC Tournament.
Top Gun: Rowan enjoyed his best scoring game against a conference opponent, knocking down six 3-pointers and finishing the day 8-for-16 from the floor. His career high is 27 points (vs. Bucknell) and his previous league high was 22 (vs. Florida State). The 6-7 wing had 18 points in the second half.
Barber shot 7-for-21 on the day and had six assists, four rebounds and two steals. Wake, which saw its season end with an 11-20 record, got 19 pionts, six assists and six steals from Bryant Crawford.
Turning Point: With Wake Forest leading 59-57 with 5:24 left, Wake's Bryant Crawford missed a pair of free throws. Rowan answered with a 3-pointer on the other end for a 5-point swing. The freshman would go on to bury treys on the next two trips, followed by a putback dunk by BeeJay Anya at the 2:59 mark. That's when the Wolfpack took control of the game and led for the rest of the game.
Tobacco Road Battle: The contest between the two long-time rivals was close until Rowan's heroics in the second half. The game featured 16 lead changes and 15 ties.
'March' Gottfried: NC State is now 21-11 in the month of March under Mark Gottfried, including an 8-4 record in ACC Tournament games.
Survive And Advance: NC State (16-16) advances to the second round Wednesday to take on No. 5 seed Duke. The game will begin approximately at 2:30 p.m. and will air on ESPN2.
