She makes 14 to compete for the Pack in the Women’s NCAA Championships
ATLANTA-Â 2016 ACC Champion Rachel Mumma earned a spot at the NCAA Championships Monday afternoon as she tabbed a third-place finish in the one-meter dive on day one of the Zone B Diving Championships, hosted by Georgia Tech inside the McAuley Aquatic Center.Â
Â
Her qualification makes Mumma the 14th Wolfpacker that will represent NC State in Atlanta for the women's championship, which is slated to run March 16-19 and will also be hosted by Georgia Tech.
Now that she has qualified in the one-meter, Mumma will need to finish in the top 12 of the standings in the three-meter and platform dives in order to advance to the NCAA Championships in all three.
Radman's Recap
"This morning was a very solid performance for Rachel. The Zone meet isn't about winning but about a certain placement," said head diving coach Yahya Radman. "She needed to be on the top nine to qualify, and finished atop of the ACC and went toe-to-toe with divers of the SEC. She did what she had to do to get to NCAAs and couldn't be prouder of her.
"Gabi couldn't manage to get off on the right foot this morning, it carried over into the competition and didn't go her way. For Harrison, he had a great warmup but when it mattered most his adrenaline got the best of him. I believe that comes with experience- the more her gets the better he will be. Right now he is young and raw in this type of atmosphere, as this type of meet is much different than dual meets and invitationals.Â
"Tomorrow is a new day and we'll see where it takes us."
Wolfpack Results
Mumma earned a score of 291.60 in the one-meter prelims to finish fifth and advance to the finals, while Gabi McDermott posed a 171.75 in the event to finish 46th and complete her first day of competition.
Â
Mumma proceeded to place third in the finals with a cumulative score of 597.60 and punch her ticket to the NCAA Championships.
Â
In the men's three-meter dive, Harrison Mitchell notched a mark of 249.15 to finish 36th in the standings.
