NC State's Chance Shepard homered in seven of the last eight contests
NC State's Chance Shepard defended his title as ACC Player of the Week, earning his second-consecutive accolade for a week featuring four homers and 10 RBIs. Shepard also led College Baseball Newspaper's National Players of the Week list.
In five games, Shepard went 7-for-18 with five runs, 10 RBIs, four homers, and three walks, sharing the honor with Wake Forest's Will Craig. The senior from Wilmington leads the ACC in home runs by two, and trails the NCAA leader by one.
On Friday, he homered in his sixth consecutive game, breaking a 22-year old school record set by Mark Wells in 1994. Shepard's streak snapped on Saturday, two games shy of tying the all-time NCAA record, but the senior did contribute a game-winning RBI with an eighth-inning sac fly to push the eighth-ranked Wolfpack past Alabama in Cary.Â
Back in Raleigh on Sunday, Shepard homered in his seventh consecutive home game, while contributing behind the dish defensively. In three games at catcher, Shepard allowed just one passed ball.
NC State remained No. 8 according to D1Baseball, No. 10 according to Perfect Game, climbed to No. 17 in Baseball America's poll, and entered the College Baseball Newspaper rankings at No. 19 following five wins last week.Â
The Wolfpack returns to Doak Field at Dail Park on Tuesday at 3 PM, riding a seven-game winning streak, for the first of two midweek games against Fairfield.
