Â
RALEIGH - The NC State track and field team will host is first home meet of the year Friday and Saturday, as it welcomes 100 NCAA programs, high school athletes, and several professional athletes to Paul Derr Track for the 2016 Raleigh Relays.
Â
In total, the meet has 2,306 individual entries and 254 relays entered to compete. The meet will be streamed on FloTrack and WATCHESPN.
Â
The Season So Far:
The event will be the team's second outdoor event of the year, but serve as the season-opener for many athletes. In its last time out, a group opened the season with 11 conference qualifying marks and 10 event wins at the Carolina Relays.
Â
After just one week, the team currently has 17 marks ranked in the top-48 of the East Preliminary standings and four marks among the top-25 of national standings.
Â
The home meet will provide a great chance for Wolfpack athletes to improve on their current marks and earn additional entries for the postseason. To qualify for ACCs, athletes must reach a standard. To qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary, athletes must be ranked in the top-48 in each individual event and the top-24 for relay teams.
Â
2015 Raleigh Relays:
At the 2015 Raleigh Relays, five meet records were either tied or broken and the Wolfpack earned 13 ACC qualifying marks, as well as several national-top marks.
Â
Wesley Frazier started the record-breaking meet with a 15:45.31 5,000m race. Josie Natrasevschi of Brown broke the discus record with a heave of 176'5" and Hillsdale's Emily Oren added a 3,000m steeplechase record of 10:04.79.
Â
On the men's side, professional athlete A.G. Kruger bested his previous hammer throw record with a toss of 248'10", while Donald Scott of Eastern Michigan tied the triple jump record of 53'9.00".
Â
Raleigh Relays Magic:
Whether it's the extra push to defend the home track or the bump from an elite field of athletes, NC State runners have posted strong marks at Raleigh Relays. Last year, the women's 5,000m group went off, as Wesley Frazier, Samantha George and Erika Kemp ran at a meet-record-breaking pace. Frazier ran unattached, and George's second-place finish captured the best mark in the nation, which remained in the top-10 national standings for most of the outdoor season. Overall, 10 times from the Raleigh Relays ended the year ranked in the top-50 of national events, with nine of those times coming from the 5,000m or 10,000m races.
Â
This year's loaded fields of athletes along with ideal racing conditions could produce another magical night for distance runners.
