RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 8 NC State baseball disrupted UNCW's undefeated record with a 5-2 win on Wednesday behind a career day from Evan Mendoza and Chance Shepard's fifth homer in the last five games.
The Wolfpack (7-2) won its fourth in a row, taking a 1-0 lead in the second on Shepard's solo shot. The Seahawks (6-1) rallied to tie in the third, before three NC State runs broke the game open. The Pack added one in the sixth, and UNCW trimmed the lead by one in the eighth, to set the final 5-2.
Shepard finished 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs, a walk and his fifth homer of the year. Mendoza came a triple away from the cycle, setting another career high in only his fourth start of the season. The sophomore belted his first collegiate homer, a double, two RBIs, and scored once in his 4-for-4 performance.
Five other Wolfpackers contributed one hit each. Josh McLain led off the game with a single, scoring once. Preston Palmeiro recorded a hit in his seventh of nine games this year.
