Three Reasons to See This Team
1. Back-to-back ACC Player of the Week Chance Shepard homered in six consecutive contests, and seven in a row at Doak Field at Dail Park, to break a 22-year old record set by Mark Wells in 1994. In addition to repeating as the ACC PotW, Shepard added a National Player of the Week mention from College Baseball Newspaper, the last of the major polls to rank NC State, making the 2016 Wolfpack a consensus Top 25 team entering conference play.
2. Scott Foxhall's rebuilt pitching staff began to coalesce this week with 14 strikeouts in its first shutout of the year, against Fairfield on Wednesday. NC State pitchers have combined to fan 14 batters three times already. Last season, the Wolfpack staff finished second in the nation in strikeouts. Will Gilbert and Tommy DeJuneas appear to anchor the pen, stacking up five saves as NC State's dual closers. DeJuneas also plays the field, going 1-for-2 with a run starting in left on Wednesday. Gilbert has 22 strikeouts to five walks through 15 IP.
3. Stunner Count: 8. Preston Palmeiro hit Chance Shepard with a Stone Cold Stunner following his Tuesday homer, the third of the year for Preston. Shepard stunnered Palmeiro all seven times during his Doak Field streak. Palmeiro marks the first teammate to perform the move on Chance. Chance's brother Shane homered in Tuesday's game as well, giving him two for the year and three for his career, but did not stunner anyone.
