ATLANTA - No. 44 NC State women's tennis opened ACC competition Friday afternoon at No. 36 Georgia Tech. The Pack fell 6-1 to the Jackets in its first conference dual and will attempt to level its conference record Sunday when it travels to No. 34 Clemson for a noon matchup.
NC State narrowly dropped doubles play Friday. After splitting matches, Martina Frantova and Tayla Stenta attempted to clinch the point but were edged by No. 27 Kendal Woodard and Paige Hourigan 7-6 (7-4).
Georgia Tech continued its momentum into singles play earning five victories over the Pack. The Wolfpack captured one singles win against the Jackets as Claudia Wiktorin defeated Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer 6-4, 3-6, 10-8.
The Wolfpack is now 6-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference while Georgia Tech improves to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in ACC play.
SIMON SAYS:
"It was clearly not the result or performance that we were looking for today. Credit to Georgia Tech and Rodney, they really took it to us in the early going in singles after the big momentum swing at No. 1 doubles and that was the determining factor in this match. The doubles point was big and anytime you have match points and don't close it's going to hurt, but with the current format you are going to win some and lose some of those matches. What we have to do is show more character to overcome that adversity and understand that, although it's important, it's just one point and there's much more to play for. The work and effort is absolutely being put in between the matches and that needs to be reflected more in our desire to find a way for this to show through in these situations. We were able to find some traction in matches late on and could have squeaked out a couple more points however the damage was done at that point and we were far too boxed into a corner to have everything go our way.
"Moving on to the match with Clemson, everything is a learning experience for our young team and it's another great opportunity for us. We will circle the wagons this evening, talk about what this all means and get back to work tomorrow in preparation." - Simon Earnshaw, head coach
