RALEIGH – NC State women's tennis opens its ACC slate this weekend with a pair of nationally-ranked conference opponents. The Pack will travel to No. 36 Georgia Tech Friday for a 3 p.m. matchup and two days later faces No. 34 Clemson at noon.
Â
PACK RISING:
NC State lists No. 44 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national poll. Up 21 spots from the previous week, it was the Wolfpack's most dramatic climb in the polls as well as its highest ranking earned since the 2012-13 season. Playing a factor in the Pack's poll improvement was a recent doubleheader sweep by the team last weekend. The Red and White earned a 7-0 victory over FGCU followed by a second 7-0 victory over Elon on Saturday, improving its home record to 5-0 and 6-1 overall.
Â
Â
SCOUT REPORT:
No. 36 Georgia Tech began its season with a competitive nonconference schedule, exposing it to an experienced level of competition early in the season. Its 5-4 record includes a victory over No. 46 William & Mary as well as a 4-2 loss to No. 21 LSU, two ranked teams the Pack has also faced resulting in a respective win, loss. The team has fallen four times, each time to a Top-25 opponent.
Â
IN DEPTH: Georgia Tech season statistics
Â
NC State faces a familiar Clemson team Sunday afternoon. A handful of Pack and Tiger players engaged in tournament play during the 2015 fall season. Most notably was Tayla Stenta's 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 defeat of Tristen Dewar in the final championship round of the USTA Clay Court Invitational in Orlando, Fla. The Clemson team currently ranks No. 34 in the polls with a roster that includes four ranked singles players as well as the No. 44 doubles duo. Highlighted among those ranked is No. 13 Joana Eidukonyte. During the fall season Joanna Nalborska faced Eidukonyte in the quarterfinal round of the ITA Carolina's Regional, falling 6-1, 6-1 to the ranked Tiger.
Â
No. 34 Clemson is another opponent with a tough schedule reflected by its 3-3 record that includes ACC wins over No. 43 Virginia Tech and No. 43 Wake Forest.

SIMON SAYS:
"We are a good ways into the season and it's been great to see the effort that the girls have been putting in on the practice courts paying off with improved results each week. I wouldn't say that we have done anything differently to prepare for the open of ACC play this week, but there's certainly been a heightened sense of urgency to make sure that everything is reinforced in the right way and everyone is physically and mentally ready. I expect the matches with Georgia Tech and Clemson to be extremely hard fought and we absolutely aren't going to be granted any favors; that's just not in the nature of any team in this league. At the same time, there's a sense of excitement and expectation among team right now to get out there and compete in matches like these. We have been looking forward to this and it is what we put in all the hard work and practice for." – Simon Earnshaw, head coach.
