
Pack Athletes Open Competition at Husky Classic, Tyson Invitational

Members of the NC State track and field team opened the first day of the Husky Classic and Tyson Invitational on Friday night.
Luis Vargas finished sixth in the 5,000m race and hit a new PR at the Husky Classic. In Arkansas, the Pack earned three top-three finishes. Nicole Chavis won the women's weight throw, Joshua Davis finished second in the men's weight throw and Jonathan Addison took third in the long jump,
Husky Classic: Results
Vargas finished sixth in the Husky Classic 5,000m race, crossing the finish line for a new PR of 13:47.00. Vargas' mark is less than four seconds away from Ryan Hill's indoor 5k school record of 13:43.52.
The mark is now ranked seventh in the NCAA and extends his grip on the ACC's first-place mark.
Tyson Invitational: Results
Jumps:
Addison took third in the most competitive long jump competition of the season so far. Addison finished with a mark of 26'1.75" - just inches behind Arkansas' Jarrion Lawson(26'3.75"). Current professional athlete Marcus Dendy won the event with a leap of 27'6.00".
Addison and Lawson are still tied for the NCAA lead, and both have season-high jumps of 26'9.75". The competition included four from the top-10 NCAA long jump standings. Addison and Lawson were the only two collegiate athletes to crack the 26' mark.
On the women's side Alexis Perry finished 12th with a jump of 19'1.50".
Sprints:
Quashawn Cunningham advanced the semifinals of the 60m dash, finishing 16th out of 57 runners with a time of 6.82. In the semi final he also took 16th, crossing the finish line in 6.83.
Last weekend, Cunningham set a 60m PR of 6.78, which currently ranks fifth in the conference.
On the women's side, Paisley Simmons finished just short of her season-best 60m mark, finishing 35th in 7.58.
In the men's 400m dash, Shannon Patterson set a new season best of 48.84.
Hurdles:
Alexis Perry advanced to the semifinals of the 60m hurdles. Perry took 13th in the prelims with a time of 8.43. In the semi finals, Perry finished 8th, crossing the finish line in 8.31. She currently holds the fourth-best mark in the conference of 8.24.
Throws:
The Pack had a strong showing in the weight throw, placing two throwers in the top two spots of the respective weight throws. Chavis took home the win in the women's weight throw with a mark of 68'2.25". The nation leader now has three wins in her last four weight throw events.
SeQuoia Watkins finished fifth with a throw of 62'5.25".
On the men's side, recent school record setter Davis, finished second and less than a foot from his record mark. Davis' throw traveled 67'6.75".
