RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State football program held its 2016 awards ceremony today in the Stewart Theater at the Talley Student Center. Senior running back Matthew Dayes took home top honors as the team MVP. Â This year, the award winners were selected by their teammates.
Dayes, who finished his Wolfpack career with some of the top rushing numbers in school history, won the Ted Brown Offensive Back of the Year Award, the Torry Holt Award for Most Valuable Offensive Player and the Governor's Award as team MVP. Dayes' eight 100-yard games this season ranks second in school history and are the most since Ted Brown himself had nine in 1977.
Â
A special moment was when the offensive line presented Dayes with the game ball from the Miami contest, when he crossed the 1,000-yard barrier for the season becoming the first player since 2002 to do so.
Junior defensive end Bradley Chubb received the Mario Williams Award for Most Valuable Defensive Player. Chubb, a second-team All-ACC performer, tallied 21 tackles for loss this season. The only Wolfpack player ever to have more is the award's namesake. Chubb leads the nation in tackles for loss and is a major reason the Wolfpack posted one of the best rushing defense marks in school .
Freshman wide receiver Kelvin Harmon was named the team's top rookie, earning the Philip Rivers Award. Harmon set an NC State freshman record for touchdown receptions in 2016 with five while his 458 receiving yards is the third-best total ever for a Wolfpack rookie.
