Wolfpack junior’s hard work on and off the court pays off
RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State volleyball's Julia Brown has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District III Team, announced Thursday by the organization.
"We continue to be proud of Julia for her many contributions to this program," said head coach Linda Hampton-Keith. "This is another example of how Julia strives for excellence in all she does. She works incredibly hard on the volleyball court and in the classroom and she is a fantastic teammate so we're all happy for Julia to be recognized with such a prestigious honor."
Â
The award recognizes student-athletes not only for their performance in the classroom, but also on the court. To qualify for the award, one must have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 or better and see significant action on the court.
Â
The Davidson, N.C., native was one of four student-athletes from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) selected to the team, as Florida State's Melanie Keil, Georgia Tech's Teegan Van Gunst and UNC-Chapel Hill's Abigail Curry also earned the honor.
Â
For Brown, the accolade is the first of her career and first for the program since 2013 when Brie Merriwether claimed the honor. The junior outside hitter owns a 3.745 grade point average (GPA) pursuing a degree in business administration.
Â
On the court, Brown has been having a fantastic season, as she is third in the ACC with 4.09 kills per set, which leads her team. She is also fourth in the league in points per set with 4.48. Against Syracuse, Brown broke the program's rally-scoring era record with 31 kills, the most in a match by any player in the ACC this season.
Â
The Wolfpack standout has really excelled under the direction of first-year head coach Hampton-Keith and her staff, as she has gone from playing three rotations at outside hitter her first two seasons to being a six-rotation outside as a junior. The increased playing time has allowed her to record double-digit kills in 20 of NC State's 24 matches.
Â
She has started every match this season, tallying 11 double-double performances with 10 or kills and 10+ digs in a contest. Brown has 364 total kills in 2016, besting any of her totals from previous seasons, with an additional eight matches remaining.
Â
Brown was named the ACC Player of the Week on Oct. 24, following a weekend in which she swatted 42 kills and also had 16 digs.
Â
Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA All-America Team ballot, where first, second and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Â
NC State returns to action this weekend when it travels to No. 10 Florida State and Miami. Friday's match against the Seminoles is set for 7 p.m., while Sunday's contest versus the Hurricanes is slated for 1 p.m.
