
Wolfpack Falls 1-0 at No. 17/6 Virginia in ACC Tournament

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Despite outshooting the nationally ranked Cavaliers by a 13-8 margin and playing a very strong match, the NC State men's soccer team fell 1-0 on the road at No. 17/6 Virginia in the first round of the 2016 ACC Tournament Wednesday evening at Klockner Stadium.
Led by senior Lukas Zarges (three shots), nine Wolfpack players recorded shots in the contest. NC State was unable to capitalize on its scoring chances and allowed the decisive goal in the 82nd minute when Pablo Aguilar scored his sixth goal of the season to send the Cavaliers through to the quarterfinal round.

-Freshman Bryant Nardizzi made the first start of his career in the contest and recorded one shot.
-NC State was whistled for 12 fouls throughout the 90 minutes compared to two for the Cavaliers.
-Redshirt senior goalkeeper Alex McCauley made two saves and ends his career ninth in program history with 157.
The Wolfpack played a very solid opening 45 minutes, outshooting the ranked Cavaliers by a 6-5 margin. Zarges was one of five Wolfpack players to record a shot in the first half, taking opportunities in the sixth and 20th minutes. Maximilian Luftl had the Wolfpack's best opportunity of the opening half, striking a knuckling ball from 25 yards towards goal. His shot dipped and struck the ground at the six-yard box, forcing Virginia goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell to make an unbalanced save.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Alex McCauley and the Wolfpack defense remained stout in the first half, neutralizing multiple quality scoring opportunities by the Cavaliers' balanced offense.
The Cavaliers took their lead in the 82nd minute when a dangerous cross was partially collected but spilled back into the penalty area right into the path of the onrushing Aguilar. The midfielder struck it first time, beating McCauley high and to the far post.
NC State came inches from equalizing in the 84th minute when leading goal scorer Julius Duchscherer ripped a first time attempt just over the crossbar from 16 yards. Teammate Clayton Sparks whipped in a dangerous ball and the sophomore midfielder nearly scored his 10th goal of the season.
