RALEIGH. N.C. – The NC State women's soccer team continues its ACC slate, as it welcomes No. 9 Florida State to Raleigh for a 3 p.m. Saturday kickoff. The Wolfpack is set to face its second consecutive top-10 opponent.
Â
NC State enters the match with a 9-4-1 (3-2-1 ACC) record, while Florida State comes in the match with a 9-2-2 (3-1-2 ACC) record.
Â
A Win Would Be:
The 10th win of the year – most since 2011
The fourth ACC win of the year – most since 1995 and only the second time in program history
The first over Florida State since 1998 and an end to 15 straight for the Seminoles in the series
The third win over a team ranked in the Soccer America poll
The second win over a top-10 team this season
Â
Pack in the Polls:
The Pack is receiving votes in the NSCAA Poll, checking in at No. 31 in the latest poll. NC State is also receiving votes in the Top Drawer Soccer Poll and ranked No. 28 in the RPI. In the ACC standings, the Wolfpack sits in seventh place amongst a crowded group of schools in the middle of the table. NC State is just one point from third place.
Â
Wolfpack Freshmen Honored:
The NC State freshman class received special recognition, as four athletes from the team were listed in Top Drawer Soccer's Top-100 Freshmen. NC State was among one of four schools in the country to have four freshman make the list and one of only five schools to have two athletes ranked in the top-25. No. 14 Kristina Schuster, No. 24 Ricarda Walkling, No. 36 Kia Rankin and No. 51 Tziarra King were all selected to the list.
Â
Scouting Florida State:
The Seminoles are outscoring opponents 22-5 and have earned nine shutouts on the year. The visitors rank second in the NCAA with a 0.37 goals against average and sixth in the nation with a 0.69 shutout percentage. The stout defense has only allowed more than one goal in a match once this season.
Â
Florida State is led by Kristen McFarland with 12 points from five goals and two assists. Deyna Castellanos is tied for the team lead with five goals, but is currently at the U-17 World Cup with Venezuela. Megan Connolly is also a threat for the Seminoles and is up to 10 points with three goals and four assists.
Â
Youth Movement:
NC State started seven freshmen and four sophomores against Louisville, marking its first time this season without an upperclassman in the starting lineup. The Pack has regularly started five freshmen in the lineup throughout the season. Freshmen have accounted for the last 13 Wolfpack goals. Overall, the group has totaled 19 goals and 18 assists for 69 percent of the team's points.
Â
Last Time Out:
Despite putting in a strong team effort, NC State fell to Duke 3-1. The Pack was caught out by a solid Duke counter attack, but ended Duke's 427-minute shutout streak with a goal from Kia Rankin. The Duke goalie had a fantastic performance to keep NC State from scoring on multiple opportunities.
