Strong performance earned her an invite to "shootout"
ATHENS, Ga.- Highlighted by senior Rachel Mumma's runner-up finish on the women's one-meter springboard, the NC State diving team completed its first day of competition at the Georgia Diving Invitational on Sunday inside Gabrielsen Natatorium.
Radman's Recap
"Everyone did well today as far as meeting what their goals were individually. We would've liked to finish a little higher and get more points, but we did hit some markers that we wanted to meet," said head diving coach Yahya Radman. "This is potentially one of the largest meets in the country up to this point in the season, and for our freshmen this is their first time competing in a meet of this caliber so it was a great first experience for all of them."
"Rachel did a phenomenal job today and rose to the occasion. She was steady throughout the prelims and did very well in the finals. She also had the chance to compete in a "shootout,"Â which was hands down one of the most exciting things to experience," Radman added.Â
"Rachel was unbelievable, it took a lot of strategy and for her to come out on top shows that you don't have to be the best at an event, but is possible to be the best at a certain skill and still win. I think today instilled a lot of confidence in our team and we're excited to see what happens tomorrow."
Wolfpack Results
Mumma earned a score of 281.85 in the women's one-meter prelims to notch a second-place finish behind 2015 NCAA Three-Meter Champion Yu Zhou of Minnesota. Advancing to the finals in the competition, she placed second again behind Zhou with a mark of 303.10.
Mumma's strong showing on the one-meter earned her a spot in a "shootout"Â that took place Sunday evening. A game of elimination, she remained the last diver standing in the event.
Additionally on the one-meter dive, Gabi McDermott and Carlie Perkins finished 29th and 37th in the event with scores of 222.60 and 208.25, respectively. Bailey Revels finished 52nd with a mark of 168.65 to round out the Wolfpack women.Â
Stewart Spanbauer represented the Pack on the men's side in the three-meter competition, finishing 29th after tabbing a score of 162.50.
