Kearney Leads Wolfpack Volleyball Past Green Wave, 3-1

Sophomore records career-best 19 kills
NEW ORLEANS – Sophomore middle blocker Kaitlyn Kearney swatted a match-high and career-best 19 kills to lead the NC State women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-17, 25-19) win against the host Tulane Green Wave Saturday afternoon inside Devlin Fieldhouse.
The Wolfpack moves to 7-1 on the year, while the Green Wave fall to 3-4. NC State is now 2-0 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic and will conclude play in the event later today against Incarnate Word at 5:30 p.m. ET.
Match Notes
- NC State and Tulane were meeting for the first time in the history of the programs, as the Wolfpack now leads the all-time series, 1-0.
- On Friday, Kearney matched her previous career best with 17 kills and today turned in another stellar performance to tally a career-high 19.
- She also notched 12 blocks to record her third career and first double-double of the season. It was the fourth of the year by a Wolfpack player.
- With the win, NC State has now won four consecutive matches.
Match Rewind
- NC State jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first set, forcing Tulane to call an early timeout. The Wolfpack extended its advantage to 9-2, following a 4-0 run in which senior Morgan Cormier had three service aces.
- Leading 19-16, the Pack stretched its lead with four consecutive points and went on to win the opening set, 25-19.
- In the second set, the Wolfpack raced out to a 9-2 lead but Tulane fought back with an 8-1 run to knot the score at 10. The Green Wave won the seesaw battle down the stretch, 27-25, as the score was tied 15 times and no team led by more than two points.
- With the score tied at 10 in the third set, NC State went on a 10-2 run to pull away from Tulane and take a 20-12 lead. A kill by freshman Sarah Konchan gave the Wolfpack set point and two points later, Cormier put down a kill to give NC State the 25-17 third-set win.
- NC State had another strong start in the fourth set, sprinting out to a 9-3 advantage resulting in a Tulane timeout. Following a 4-0 run by the Green Wave, the Wolfpack called a timeout and put together a 4-0 run of its own out of the break to extend its lead to 17-9.
- A service error by Tulane's Sarah Ray ended the match, as NC State claimed the fourth set, 25-19 and the overall match, 3-1.
Top Performers
- Aside from Kearney's 19 kills, classmate Perry Ramsey also had a great match putting down 13 kills and a .419 hitting percentage. Freshman Blayke Hranicka chipped in with seven kills.
- Junior Maggie Speaks handed out 42 assists to tie as the match-high and also collected seven digs, three blocks and three kills.
- Defensively, senior Tanna Aljoe led the way with nine digs, while sophomore defensive specialist Emily Harris contributed eight.
