RALEIGH, N.C. - On Sunday night, ESPN College GameDay host, Heisman Trophy winner, and Super Bowl MVP Desmond Howard visited NC State to talk with student athletes on the importance of attitude and leadership.
Howard spoke as part of an on-going speaker series hosted by The Wolfpack Leadership Academy through NC State's Athletics Department. Howard's message focused on having the right attitude and being a better leader.
He opened with a story about his time at Michigan and how an attitude change, paired with his desire to play earned him a spot on the field. He also touched on common hurdles that student-athletes face, including the challenge of juggling athletics and academics.
When speaking on leadership, Howard referenced stories from Michigan and Green Bay, and how each situation required a different form of leadership ranging from leading by example to stepping up and being a vocal leader.
He closed with a Q&A session; fielding questions ranging from challenges he faced as a student-athlete to what will it take for College Football GameDay to visit NC State.
"It's really a blessing and I love coming to speak to athletes," said Howard. "Even though it's my busy season, to get an opportunity like this, I have to take advantage of it. You never know when you might get another opportunity like this."
"For the kids to come out, when they could be doing anything else but they chose to come here and listen to me, I feel honored."
The Wolfpack Leadership Academy provides teams with interactive leadership development sessions on team building, ethical leadership, conflict resolution, appreciating differences, and clear communication.
Earlier in the year, the program brought in former NBA player and addiction recovery advocate, Chris Herron.
Speakers and dates for the spring of 2016 will be released later this winter.
