TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The NC State women's soccer team dropped an Atlantic Coast Conference road match against the defending national champion No. 2 Florida State Seminoles Thursday evening, falling by a final score of 4-0.
Freshman goalkeeper Sydney Wootten tied a career high with seven saves in the match and both Jackie Stengel and Alexa Allen registered two shots apiece for the Wolfpack.
"Obviously, Florida State is a really good team," said NC State head coach Tim Santoro. "A few of the goals we'd like to have back because we feel as though they were preventable, but the better team won the game tonight."
The Seminoles (11-1-1, 4-0-1 ACC) got off to a fast start, scoring in the second minute when Michaela Hahn beat Wootten for the early advantage. The freshman goalkeeper rebounded quickly, making four straight saves to keep Florida State at bay.
"Syd was good. She was very good," Santoro said. "Florida State scored a few really good goals despite Syd being one of the highlights of the night for us."
Elin Jensen doubled the advantage for the hosts in the 35th minute. Wootten then passed an important test in the 41st, saving a penalty by Carson Pickett before Dallas Dorosy was able to make it 3-0 a minute later.
Stengel had two chances for the Pack in the 64th minute, but Cassie Miller was able to make back-to-back saves in a six-second span to keep NC State (4-9-0, 0-4-0 ACC) off the board.
Isabella Schmid scored the final goal of the match, making it 4-0 in the 68th minute on a free kick following a Wolfpack foul.
NC State will continue its journey through Florida on Sunday, Oct. 11 against Miami. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Hurricanes is set for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
