CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The NC State women's soccer team dropped a tough Atlantic Coast Conference match on the road at Miami Sunday afternoon, falling by a final score of 3-2 in double overtime. The Wolfpack built a 2-0 lead through the first 30 minutes of the match but was ultimately defeated by a hat trick from Miami's Gracie Lachowecki, with the last of her three goals coming in the 109th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Sydney Wootten made a career-high 10 saves during the match. Redshirt sophomore Jackie Stengel scored the opening goal and provided an assist on the Wolfpack's second tally.
"With a 2-0 lead, we've got to be able to put that game away," NC State head coach Tim Santoro said. "It's very disappointing. In the second half we conceded a few poor goals."
State (4-10-0, 0-5-0 ACC) took the lead just 3:04 into the match when Jenna Kalwa floated in a nice ball over the top to Stengel. State's leading goal scorer made no mistake with her early opportunity, beating the goalkeeper high for her fifth goal of the season.
Stengel then threaded through a nice ball to teammate Rachel Cox in the 30th minute. Cox recorded her first career goal, beating Catalina Perez high to double the Pack's advantage.
"Jackie played very well today," Santoro added. "She follows the game plans and knows what to do. She was making runs behind the defense and she played a great ball in behind the defense (on her assist), which was something that was on all day and she was able to exploit it."
Miami (5-8-0, 2-4-0 ACC) responded quickly in the second half, scoring goals in the 51st and 59th minutes to pull level. Lachowecki—the Hurricanes' leading scorer—netted both of the goals for the hosts.
Alexa Allen nearly scored the match winner in the 82nd minute when her left-footed shot from 18 yards out struck the crossbar.
Lachowecki would win the match for the Hurricanes in the 109th minute when she scored following a pass from Natalie Moik.
NC State will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 18 at Syracuse. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Orange is set for 12 p.m. and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and the ACC's Regional Sports Network package.
